Becoming a Seed Shepherd

What is a Seed Shepherd?
A Seed Shepherd is one of the most valuable assets of the GES Organization and its communities. Their role involves sorting seeds and managing pick-ups and drop-offs from various hosts, headquarters, events, or gardening friends. They ensure that Seed Libraries and containers at the Garden Stands are well-stocked, returning them ready for distribution or upcoming events.
If you're looking to complete your volunteer hours or if your company supports non-profits by matching volunteer hours, becoming a Seed Shepherd is a fantastic opportunity to contribute at your own pace and from the comfort of your home. We provide envelopes and origami seed packets made from seed magazines, old books, newspapers, or brown bags, which will be ready for you when you pick up the seeds.
During Free Seed Tables, festivals, or seed-packing events, we set up stations where participants can label the GES Organization Seed Cards, fill them, and staple them together.

Seed Distribution Process
We categorize the seeds into the following groups:
- Vegetables
- Herbs
- Flowers
- Trees and Bushes
- Native Plants
We encourage you to schedule a brief 15-minute tutorial during an event. This will allow us to have additional volunteers available to assist new gardening friends who stop by to either drop off their garden seeds or browse what’s available.
If you are a current Seed Shepherd who takes home supplies, please inform us ahead of time when you plan to attend an event or visit a specific location or headquarters to pick up supplies. This way, we can prepare a box for you. Thank you!
🍃 Please remember that seeds are living thing and cannot survive in a hot container for extended periods. In warmer climates, we will temporarily remove seeds until the weather is suitable, typically around 75-80°F.
